Baggage and Luggage questions:

Carry-on baggage

Carry-on baggage for worldwide travel

For worldwide travel on United (including travel within the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada), you may carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase or laptop computer. Your carry-on bag
must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin;
should not be more than 9 x 14 x 22 in. (23 x 35 x 56 cm) (length x width x height) or 45 linear inches* (114 linear cm); and
may be required to travel as checked baggage if the bag cannot be safely stowed on a particular flight.

*linear measurement = length + width + height

United exempts the following personal items from your one bag and one personal item limit:

Child safety seats for ticketed children
Assistive devices (canes, crutches, etc.)
Outer garments (coats, hats, etc.)
Liquids, gels and aerosols
Liquids, gels and/or aerosols are permitted through security checkpoints worldwide. Items must fit in one clear, resealable quart- or liter-sized plastic bag, in containers of 3 oz. (100 mL) or less. (For ease of memory, please follow the 3-1-1 rule.)

Plastic bags must be completely sealed and will be x-rayed separately at the security checkpoint.

The following items are allowed but must be presented to officials at security checkpoints if they are of greater volume than 3 oz. (100 mL):

Baby formula/milk, including breast milk and baby food in containers. You do not have to be traveling with a baby or small child for these items to be allowed.
Medications (liquid, gel or aerosol)
Liquids, juices or gels for diabetic passengers who indicate a need for such items to address their medical condition. (A letter from your physician is not necessary.)
Liquids, gels and/or aerosols (including duty-free items) purchased in the boarding area are permitted onboard the aircraft.

If you are connecting to another flight and are required to reenter through a security checkpoint, the regulations outlined above will apply, and no exemption will be made for items you purchased in the boarding area of your originating city.

Flights departing from or connecting through the United Kingdom

If you are departing from or connecting through London Heathrow (LHR), you are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item as stated above; however, please note that the Department for Transport (DfT) regulations in the U.K. require that the 45 linear inches (114 linear cm) includes the handles and wheels of your carry-on bag.

Travel during peak periods

When traveling to Mexico City during the peak winter, spring and summer months, and holiday periods, customers will be asked to voluntarily designate a secondary bag that may be placed on a later flight. We will only be able to guarantee a primary bag at times when capacity exceeds space limitations.

During the peak winter travel period of December 1 - January 7, customers are limited to the number, size and weight of their checked baggage as outlined in the chart above. No oversize, overweight or extra bags will be accepted. In addition, the following guidelines will apply to all customers during this period:

No oversize, overweight or extra bags will be accepted
Pets will not be accepted as part of a customer's checked baggage
Only one box is permitted as part of a customer's free allowance; it must be the original manufacturer's box containing the original item

Travel originating in London

The British Airport Authority strictly limits checked baggage originating in London to 70 pounds (32 kg) per piece. Any piece exceeding the limit must be repackaged into smaller units.

We recommend contacting United Reservations in advance when checking items such as musical instruments, sporting equipment, camera equipment, etc. that cannot be subdivided to meet the weight limit.
